The specification for the C-130 medium cargo aircraft design was drafted just six years after the end of World War II. Having been designed for the Korean War in 1951, the C-130 was not contingent upon any other aircraft design and thus, Lockheed engineers had a clean slate to work from. Even though the aircraft missed the Korean war, it quickly served with distinction in Indochina, Vietnam, and numerous other conflicts while continuously being reinvented for each new mission. The C-130 Hercules, known as the ‘Herky Bird’, has been adopted by over 60 other countries, converted into 35 different variations, and serves as a vital humanitarian platform by delivering important cargo into remote regions other aircraft cannot. The C-130 holds the distinction of having the longest, continuous production run of any military aircraft in history.
