The Story Behind the Print:

In 2013, Precious Metal returned to the Reno National Championship Air Races with a completely reimagined presence. The highly modified P-51D, powered by a Rolls-Royce Griffon 57A driving contra-rotating propellers, featured a striking new paint scheme along with aerodynamic refinements including extended wingtips, an elongated canopy, and a modified radiator “doghouse” adapted for racing performance. Beneath the polished exterior was a carefully prepared Griffon engine configuration designed to withstand the immense stresses of unlimited air racing, where speeds routinely exceeded 440 mph around the pylons.

That season demanded both precision and restraint. Engine bearing issues during pre-race testing required the installation of a backup powerplant, and cooling limitations meant the aircraft had to be managed carefully throughout the eight-lap Gold race. Even so, Precious Metal remained a formidable contender, demonstrating both the capability of its engineering and the discipline of its race strategy.

Artist Craig Tinder attended the Reno races that year and worked closely with the ground crew to document the aircraft in detail. Through that direct relationship, he was able to secure authentic relic material from Precious Metal, preserving a tangible connection to one of the most distinctive and technically innovative Mustangs ever to compete at Reno.

About the Relic & Process

This relic originates from the honeycomb floor structure of Precious Metal, the extensively modified P-51D that competed in Unlimited Class racing at Reno. The composite honeycomb construction was engineered to deliver exceptional strength while minimizing weight—an essential balance in an environment where structural integrity must withstand extreme G-loads, vibration, and sustained high-speed flight.

Unlike standard wartime Mustang construction, racing modifications demand continual refinement of materials and internal components to extract every possible performance advantage. This section represents part of that specialized airframe engineering, developed specifically to endure the unique stresses of pylon racing while keeping the aircraft as light and efficient as possible.

Removed during race preparation and upgrades, this piece provides a direct connection to one of the most technically innovative Mustangs to circle the Reno pylons. It reflects not only the heritage of the P-51 design, but its evolution into a purpose-built racing machine at the highest level of Unlimited competition.
