Skylab I & Skylab II Apollo Mission Patches

From the mid-1900s during the Space Race, every astronaut wore patches on his in-flight uniform and pressure suits. After the Apollo I fire, NASA wanted non-flammable material for its astronaut's patches. Owens Corning Corporation developed Beta cloth is a fireproof material woven from Teflon coated glass fibers. The cloth was sent to Screen Print Corporation of Coventry, RI to print mission patches in Beta cloth. These patches were then sent to NASA: they were used on astronaut suits as mentioned above, for contractor technicians and carried as souvenirs.

Specifications

  • The round patch was for the Skylab II mission. This mission had the crew of Bean, Garriott, and Lousma.

  • The Skylab II actual patch has a 4 inches diameter.

  • The Skylab 1 measure approx. 4 inches as issued to the Astronauts.

  • This would make an excellent addition to any Americana/Military collection!
