Gregory 'Pappy' Boyington was with the Marine Corps before he resigned to become one of the 1st American Volunteer Group - the Flying Tigers - based in Burma and under the command of Claire Lee Chennault.
He later rejoined the Marine Corps and ultimately became commander of Marine Fighter Squadron VMF-214 nicknamed, 'the Black Sheep.'
In January 1944 Boyington was shot down over the Pacific Ocean during a dogfight with enemy fighters and was picked up by a Japanese submarine. He spent 20 months as a POW and was released after the Japanese surrender in 1945.
He was decorated with the Medal of Honor, Navy Cross and Purple Heart.
