As one of the RAF's first qualified Spitfire pilots in 1939, Robert S. Tuck would become a fighter ace by the Battle of Dunkirk and would be a confident leader during the Battle of Britain. Having worked closely with Supermarine engineers to fine-tune the Spitfire, he was often chosen for shakedown flights of newly acquired RAF aircraft including the P-39 Aircobra and Hawker Tempest. In 1941, after targeting an alcohol distillery in France, he was shot down by a 20mm German flak gun just before he turned to take this hostile target out. His German captures praised him for his incredibly accurate marksmanship as one of his 20mm shells had gone straight up the barrel of the flak gun, splitting it like a banana. Oberst (Colonel) Adolf Galland soon invited Tuck for dinner where they realized they had each shot down each other's wingmen during a Duxford Wing fighter sweep in 1941. After multiple escape attempts, Tuck eventually escaped successfully in 1945 by reaching the Russian lines. The war ended before he could get back to Britain.
